Oculus App Content – A New Place For Independent Developers

We’re all familiar with the process when it comes to the Oculus Storefront and its rigorous curation. This is how we ensure the quality of apps and games high, and also prevent low-quality ones from slipping through. This makes it difficult for independent developers to release their VR content on Oculus.

Oculus launched “App Lab” as a solution to this issue. It allows independent developers to publish their VR content in a secure location without needing to go through the rigorous curating of the Oculus Storefront. The App Lab is very similar to the Oculus storefront. You can browse and download apps in the same way as you would on the traditional virtual storefront. However, it’s less than curated.

If your app does well in the App Lab in the App Lab, it may be pushed to the official Oculus storefront, where it will gain more attention and a larger audience. However this isn’t just based on the number of downloads, but also on other factors like retention metrics and long-term profitability, the development team, etc.

App Lab is an excellent way to experience the full spectrum of Oculus Quest applications. There are many fun games and experiences, including well-known nongames like Tilt Brush which turns your headset in to an immersive art studio. There are a lot of interesting VR media apps such as Quill Theater, which showcases an amazing community-created 6DoF animation and movie content.
